From Carol Aubrey, Program Developer
Summer, 2010
Dear Teachers, Homeschoolers and Parents,
Are you looking for new ways to teach writing?
Can you use a program that is:
•
Hands-on
•
Fun & Active
• Diverse
• Aligns with State Standards
If
so, read on!
The INCITE TO WRITE strategies develop the skills students
need to score high on state-standardized writing tests.
The
program takes students through a diverse series of writing strategies
that systematically build up their writing skills by activating,
strengthening, and expanding their thinking skills. It provides
them with confidence and a clear understanding of Narrative
and Expository writing and the mechanics of good
writing in general.
“Elizabeth
is filled with ideas on what to write since taking your
class. She asks lots of questions to give her writing details
and she’s using adjectives and descriptive details.”
Natalie
Lowe, parent
“Daniel's self-esteem has gone way up. He
is not afraid of his writing assignments in school anymore,
and he likes using his imagination."
Sonia
Perez, parent
INCITE
TO WRITE! has been a successful program for over 13 years and
used by teachers in school districts across the country. Previously,
it was only available by license. School districts, summer camps,
and individuals wishing to run an INCITE TO WRITE! program for
profit could license the program for $5,000.
NOW,
after years of people asking me if they could buy the Manual,
I am happy to make the Program Manual available to teachers, homeschoolers
and parents for non-commercial use in the classroom and
at home for a very LOW price.
WHAT’S
INSIDE?
The Program Manual for INCITE TO WRITE! contains over 150 pages
of successful strategies that are fun, active, and proven winners
with kids.
Each section includes active writing strategies along with worksheets
and booklets that can be reproduced for classroom use.
There are 7 Sections in the Program Manual, each available as
a separate PDF format downloadable file:
• Sample Weekly Class Schedules of Strategies
• Mechanics of Writing: Paragraph Building
• Mechanics of Writing: Grammar
• Narrative Writing
• Expository Writing
• Critical Thinking / Fun Writing
• Supplemental Strategies for Beginning Writers

WEEKLY CLASS SCHEDULES
Don’t
know where to begin?
The
INCITE TO WRITE! manual is filled with so many interesting activities
and strategies that it could be hard and time-consuming to know
where to start! To alleviate this problem, there are fourteen
weeks of suggested class schedules with one activity a day from
Monday through Friday.
The suggested schedule of activities introduces both the teacher
and student to the foundation basics of the INCITE TO WRITE! program
and guides the student into increasing competency in writing and
thinking skills, insuring student success with the more advanced
writing strategies.
II.
MECHANICS: PARAGRAPH BUILDING
Nothing is more basic to writing than the ability to expand on
a theme, yet it is in this area where students have the most problems.
How often have you heard, “I can’t think of
anything else to write”?
This is actually a thinking problem, not a writing problem. Expanding
on a theme demands higher level critical and creative thinking
skills, and it is the essential “thinking” component
of writing that makes it so difficult to master.
The Solution?
Lots of fun and fast-paced strategies based on the Art of Asking
Questions and the Socratic Questioning Model. Questions serve
as the springboard into higher level thinking skills. The team
question games in this section are designed to wake up lazy brain
cells and help kids:
• Get curious about the bigger picture
• Create supporting details
• Stay in the inquiry and keep an open mind
• Stay on topic
• Organize their writing
III.
MECHANICS: GRAMMAR & DESCRIPTIVE LANGUAGE
Grammar doesn’t have to be boring!
This section focuses on great ways to teach grammar, compound
and complex sentences, and descriptive detail with lots of jazzy
adjectives. It includes:
• a fun strategy to break students of the habit of beginning
sentences with And, So, But, Then;
• ways to use adjectives as a springboard into creative
stories;
• fun ways to teach similes, subject & predicate,
prepositions, transition words, and subordinating conjunctions.
• A 5-page, fill-in-the-blank story, suitable for copying,
that uses a special, traditional Halloween game to help kids
use descriptive details.
IV.
NARRATIVE WRITING
Is it possible to teach Narrative Writing without students
even picking up a pencil?
YES!
YES! YES!!
Using storytelling and drama-based strategies, students easily
learn to become the Beginning, Middle and End of a story, co-creating
a problem and solution with lots of descriptive details.
The many hands-on, group-centered activities in this section focus
on:
• a simple formula for teaching the structure of narrative
writing;
• how to quickly come up with story outlines and expand
on them;
• preparation for state-standardized writing tests using
writing prompts;
• staying focused and thinking fast.
V.
EXPOSITORY WRITING
Expository writing is a wonderful vehicle for explaining
things in a clear, simple and enlightening way!
Starting with the first strategy where students physically get
into the formation of expository writing, the strategies in this
session are designed to build not only confidence, but enjoyment
of the expository writing process. Students will learn:
• how to develop expository paragraphs;
• use pantomime "freeze frames" to capture
the main idea in each paragraph;
• how to outline and pre-write quickly;
• transition words that help students follow the
basic expository structure.
In addition, there are several creative expository writing assignments
that students love.
VI. CRITICAL THINKING / FUN WRITING
The writing and hands-on activities in this session encompass
both creative writing, expository writing, persuasive and essay
writing.
They emphasize critical thinking and logic, imagination
and creativity.
Some of the strategies are arts-based, some are done outdoors;
some of the writing is done individually, and some in teams or
with partners.
What they all have in common is that they are
• enjoyable
• stimulating
• and engage students in the writing process
VII.
SUPPLEMENTAL STRATEGIES FOR BEGINNING WRITERS
For younger writers or writers who are struggling, this section
is filled with fun strategies that boost self-esteem and build
basic writing and vocabulary skills, including:
- introduction
to adjectives
- poetry
and rhyming
- an easy
template for beginning Narrative Writing
- booklets
to fill in
"The
INCITE TO WRITE program is a fun and creative method of
teaching young students to feel successful and be successful
at writing. I noticed significant improvements in the critical
thinking and writing skills of my kids. I highly recommend
this program."
Mimi Mangines,
Parent
"(The INCITE TO WRITE) activities are all interactive
and well planned. Great ideas, very student centered, and
fun."

Advanced Academic Programs, Miami-Dade
Public
Schools
WHY IS INCITE TO WRITE SO SUCCESSFUL?
Intrinsic to the great success INCITE TO WRITE! has enjoyed over
the years is the recognition that good writing in the early grades
depends on good critical and creative thinking skills.
The mechanics of writing are easy to master, just like the multiplication
tables, but it is the thinking component that makes writing a
high-level skill.
The good news is that critical and creative thinking skills can
be incredibly fun to teach and to learn. They are best learned
in a group environment that is charged with action, partnership,
and that engages students from the feet up in the writing
process.
The
INCITE TO WRITE strategies activate children's brainstorming abilities
and enable students to push their boundaries by learning from
the unique imaginations of each other.
By the time students sit down to write, they are eager to pick
up a pencil because they have so much to say. After all, that
is the main purpose of writing to begin with, so it is no wonder
kids stress over it if they have nothing to say.
"My
3rd grade son found writing difficult, and because he wasn't
perfect at it, he'd give up before he even got started. The
Incite to Write sessions changed him. He's had so much fun
creating stories with his new friends and doing "Punch
the Period" that now he's not afraid to pick up a pencil."
