The
charts below serve as a guide to what can reasonably be expected
teaching a minimum number of private classes. If you add more
classes, you can make considerably more. The figures below do
not include earnings from teaching in an afterschool program,
which is a desirable option. Additional earnings can also include
income from private tutoring, which will naturally come from offering
classes.
SUMMER
8
WEEK SUMMER SESSION
This
scenario assumes 10 students each paying $100 a week. Competitive
rates for small classes like this may range from a low of $75/week
to a high of $150/week, depending upon what area in the country
you live.
6
weeks with morning & afternoon sessions:
9:00
- 12:00; 1:00 - 4:00
10
students per session = 20 students per week at $100/each = $2,000/wk
X 6 weeks =
$12,000
(30
hrs of work per week)
+ 2 weeks with only a morning session:
9:00
- 12:00 noon
10 students per week at $100/each = $1,000 per week X 2 weeks
=
$2,000
(15
hrs of work per week)
Total for 8-week summer session:
$14,000
(working
only 210 hrs)
FALL & SPRING
September,
October, November
January,
February, March
MONTHLY
SESSIONS:
This
scenario assumes 2 afterschool classes a week with 10 students
in each class paying $125/month.
Example:
Thursdays,
Grades 1, 2
3:30
5:30
Fridays,
Grades 3-5
3:00
- 5:15
10
students per class at $125/month = $1,250 X 2 classes =
$2,500/month
$2,500
per month X 6 months = $15,000
(working 16 hours per month)
WINTER
BREAK
one
week in Dec/beg. Jan.
Two
sessions:
9:00-12:00
and 1:00-4:00
10
students in each session at
$100 =
$1,000 per session X 2 sessions
$2,000
(one
week, 30 hrs.)
SUMMARY
Annual
Earnings:
September
- March (except December)
2
afternoons a week,
4
hours each week = $15,000
Winter
Break:
1
week, 30 hours =
$ 2,000
8-week Summer Session = $14,000
______
TOTAL
YEARLY EARNINGS
(for
part time work):
$31,000
ADDITIONAL
OPTIONS
The
INCITE TO WRITE program is ideal for women and men who want a
good income for part time work so that they are free to pursue
other interests or raise a family.
However,
if you are interested in spending more time on your business,
there are other opportunities available. Classes can easily be
held every day after school during the school year, instead of
just two days a week as outlined above. Besides holding classes
at your home and at a school, you can partner with a Boys &
Girls Club, the YMCA, or any afterschool program.
You
do not need to adjust the cost of your program to accommodate
lower-income families. When you become a non-profit business
(which I suggest you do regardless of how many hours you want
to spend on your business) you can receive small grants and funds
from corporations and local agencies. They are looking for programs
like this to fund. Improving writing in young people is
a national educational priority, and such organizations are willing
to pay the cost for 10 to 20 students or more to attend a writing
program that targets improvement on state-standardized tests and
writing in general. They also like funding partnerships
between a program such as yours, and other schools and organizations.
